Walschmidt
and Oakley win at Lake Shelbyville
On May 6,
2007 the Illinois Bass Federation held their second tournament
of the season on Lake Shelbyville. Anticipation of a great
tournament was high as the spring water and air temperatures
appeared just right for pre-spawn and spawning bass. After the
very disappointing opener that was held on Rend Lake a month
earlier, the anglers were ready to have a good tournament.
At the pre-tournament meeting Saturday evening, the talk around
the tables was not good. The low pressure front that had rolled
into the area on Friday, producing strong winds from the east,
had drastically slowed the bite. Finding keeper sized fish had
now become a problem as the bigger fish that were shallow just
days earlier had now disappeared.
The anticipation of a good weigh-in now being diminished the
anglers would have to settle for finding one or two quality
bites and hope for the best. At the end of the day, two anglers,
Pro angler Jason Waldschmit of the Mcclean Co. Bassmasters and
Am angler Kent Oakley from the Falcon Bass Club would find the
bites needed to win their respective division.
